- The name, Vélo’V is a portmanteau of French vélo (bike) and English “Love”.
- The Vélo’V was the first public biking scheme in France created in 2005, the predecessor of Velib’ in Paris and VeloToulouse in Toulouse.
How do you use the Vélo’V bike in Lyon?
The Vélo’V is a quick way to get around Lyon (bar the 2 hills!) and it’s super easy to use. It is not part of the Carte Télécy, you must pay for it separately.
You have 4 options:
- Vélo’V for everyday
- E-Vélo’V
- Vélo’V Occasionally
- MyVélo’V Long-Term Rentals
How much does Vélo’V cost?
There are two main plans to choose from depending on your use:
- Everyday plan: with this plan, you have unlimited use of the bikes for one year. This plan costs between €15 and €31 a year.
- Occasional plan: the price of a one-trip ticket is €1.80 while a one-day ticket is €4. The first 30 minutes of each trip is free. After that, the cost is €0.05/min. for the first paid half-hour, €0.10/min. for the second paid half-hour, and €0.15/min. for the third paid half-hour. If you have a Lyon City Card, you are entitled to a special rate. For €5, you can make unlimited journeys for 72 hours.
- When you sign up to a long-term plan, you can add the e-bike option (with an electric bike). For €7/month, you have use of a portable battery, which is either sent to your home or you can pick-up from one of the collection points.

How do you use the bike in Lyon?
It’s quite easy, you can register online or at one of the computers at every Vélo’V station. To find your nearest one you can download the Vélo’V app (iOS / Android), use Citymapper (iOS / Android) or the website.
- Create an account on the website, all your usage will be related to that.
- Select your subscription & enter payment information
- Go to a docking station!
How do I activate my Vélo’V card?
You will receive the card by post with an activation code. This activation code will be used to activate the card before first use. To proceed with this activation, you must go to a terminal. Once the card has been passed through the electronic payment reader, you will need to enter the activation code and generate a 4-digit secret code.
